The Life in the UK Test is a formal requirement for most people applying for British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). It tests your knowledge of British history, culture, values, and everyday life — all drawn from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents.
The test is taken at an approved test centre across the UK. You have 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple-choice questions. A score of 18 or more correct answers (75%) is required to pass. Results are given immediately on the day.
Most applicants aged 18 to 64 applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship are required to pass the test. Certain categories — including those aged 65 and over — may be exempt. Your immigration adviser can confirm whether it applies to your application.
