Cookie Policy

What cookies we use, why we use them, and how you stay in control.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device when you visit them. They are widely used to make websites work correctly, to remember your preferences, and to provide information to site owners.

As well as cookies, websites may use similar technologies such as localStorage — storage built into your browser — to remember settings and progress locally on your device.

Our Approach to Cookies

Milestone uses a minimal-cookie approach. We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles, track you across unrelated websites, or sell your data.

We categorise cookies into three types: Essential, Analytics, and Advertising. We will always ask for your consent before setting any non-essential cookie.

When you first visit Milestone, a consent banner will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, accept essential cookies only, or manage your preferences in detail.

Your choice is stored in your browser's localStorage under the key 'milestone_cookie_consent', and a lightweight cookie named 'milestone_cc' is set to remember your preference for up to one year.

You can change your cookie preferences at any time by clearing your browser's localStorage for this site, which will cause the consent banner to reappear on your next visit.

Essential Cookies

Essential cookies and browser storage are required for the site to function correctly. They cannot be disabled.

These include your theme preference (light, warm, dark), font size, font family, and your cookie consent choice itself. All of this is stored locally on your device using localStorage — it is never transmitted to our servers.

No personal data is involved. These preferences stay on your device and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.

Analytics Cookies (Google Analytics)

With your consent, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site — which pages are visited most, how long people spend studying, and which areas may need improvement.

Google Analytics sets cookies to distinguish users and sessions. The data collected is aggregated and anonymised to the greatest extent possible. We do not use it to identify individual users.

We have configured Google Analytics to respect your consent choice: if you decline analytics cookies, the GA4 script will not load and no analytics data will be collected.

Google Analytics data is processed by Google LLC under their own Privacy Policy. For more information, visit: policies.google.com/privacy

Advertising Cookies (Planned)

To keep Milestone free, we plan to introduce non-intrusive advertising through Google AdSense. When active, advertising cookies will only be set if you give your consent.

Advertising cookies may be used to show relevant ads and to measure ad performance. These cookies are set by Google and governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

We are committed to keeping advertising restrained and non-intrusive. We will never allow pop-ups, auto-playing video ads, or formats that disrupt the study experience.

We set one first-party cookie of our own: 'milestone_cc'. This cookie records whether you have accepted or declined non-essential cookies, so we know whether to activate analytics and advertising scripts.

Name: milestone_cc. Purpose: Stores your cookie consent choice (accepted or essential-only). Duration: 1 year. Type: First-party, functional.

Third-Party Cookies

When analytics or advertising are enabled, third-party cookies from Google may be set on your device. These are governed by Google's own privacy and cookie policies.

We do not control third-party cookies and cannot access the data stored in them. Their use is subject to their respective privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

You have several ways to manage cookies on Milestone:

Via our consent banner: On your first visit, choose 'Essential only' or 'Manage preferences' to control which categories are active.

Via browser settings: All major browsers allow you to block or delete cookies. Blocking essential storage may affect site functionality such as theme and font preferences.

Via clearing localStorage: Clearing this site's localStorage through your browser's developer tools or privacy settings will reset your consent choice and cause the banner to reappear.

Note: Clearing cookies set by Google (such as GA4 analytics cookies) must be done through your browser settings or Google's account settings, as these are not controlled by Milestone.

Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a 'Do Not Track' (DNT) signal. Milestone respects your consent choice as set in our cookie banner. We encourage you to use the banner to make your preferences explicit, as DNT signals are not universally implemented across third-party services.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when we add new features, change service providers, or in response to regulatory guidance. The 'Last Updated' date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.

Significant changes, such as the introduction of new cookie categories, will prompt the consent banner to reappear so you can review and update your preferences.
