Getting the Most from Practice

  • Learn the answers in Key Facts or Civics Questions first, then practice the same topic
  • Read the explanation for every answer — it lists all the answers USCIS accepts
  • Say your answer out loud before you choose: the real test is spoken
  • Repeat sets you find hard after a day or two to help the answers stick
  • Choose your state first, so questions about your senators, governor and capital are included

What is Practice by Topic?

Practice by Topic turns every question on the official 2025 civics list into multiple-choice practice, grouped by the official USCIS topics: American Government, American History, and Symbols and Holidays.

Every correct answer is an answer USCIS accepts. The real test is different: a USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions out loud, and you must answer at least 12 correctly. Use the Mock Interview to practice that format.

How to Use Practice by Topic

Work through the sets in order, or start with the topics you find hardest. Each set takes a few minutes, so you can fit one into a short break.

Some answers depend on where you live or change after elections. Choose your state to include questions about your senators, representative, governor and capital. Questions about current officials use the names from the latest USCIS test updates.

Getting the Most from Practice

  • Words in brackets in an answer are optional — “(Thomas) Jefferson” means “Jefferson” is also correct
  • Questions that ask for two, three or five answers need every answer correct
  • Check the answers that change shortly before your interview
  • If you get a question wrong, review it in Key Facts before trying the set again

After Practice by Topic

When you can answer every set confidently, take the Mock Interview. It asks questions one at a time, like the real test, where you need at least 12 correct answers out of up to 20 questions.
